Kit Harington Doesn’t Yet Have A Confirmed Place In The MCU’s Future
Despite Eternals’ tantalizing glimpses into the character Dane Whitman is becoming, there’s no confirmed next appearance for Black Knight in the MCU. Such an appearance does seem inevitable given the actor’s star power and the fact that Black Knight would be a strong Marvel character to adapt for the screen at some point. For now, however, Harington has asserted that he doesn’t know when his next Dane Whitman appearance could be, and that he’s still waiting to hear from Marvel on this front. Whether or not he’s telling the truth about his knowledge remains to be seen, but it is true that Marvel hasn’t made any firm announcements just yet.
At the same time, there are plenty of possibilities for where Black Knight could return to the MCU. Major end-credits reveals always portend the next significant event in the MCU, and the inclusion of Blade’s voice ahead of the MCU Blade reboot suggests that he and Black Knight could meet soon, with Dane perhaps even making a cameo in the Blade film. Additionally, the mid-credits scene sets up the other Eternals Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Thena (Angelina Jolie) on a quest to find the others, with Eros, a.k.a. Starfox (Harry Styles), arriving to offer help. With Dane retrieving the Ebony Blade right after Sersi’s abduction by Arishem, this could also suggest he’ll be a part of the mission to rescue the three captured Eternals.
In a more general sense, with his comic book history, Dane could also be the first in a new generation of heroes being set up for Avengers 5. Black Knight’s post-Eternals future is full of mystery, but he’s been set up as a relatively major player in the MCU’s future. As a new MCU hero, it also now seems particularly likely that Black Knight will be a possible associate of Blade in his MCU movie, too.

He shared some disappointing news about his future in the MCU
During a recent interview on BBC’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Harington faced questions about his future in the MCU. But he didn’t give the answer fans were hoping for. Instead, the actor shared a disappointing update.
“I’ll have to ask you, because the fans have been asking, what’s the future of Dane Whitman AKA Black Knight? Any more happening? Any things in the diary planned?” Ball asked Harington.
“No, not that I know of. It sounds like a very political answer but, I mean, it’s exciting for me because the last film, as anyone who has seen it, kind of sets an idea up that I might go further,” Harington replied.

There have been several heroes and villains to carry the mantle of Black Knight, but Dane Whitman is easily the most enduring and popular of them all. Dane wields a mystical sword called the Ebony Blade and carries on the heroic legacy of his ancestor, Sir Percy of Scandia. He’s been a valuable member of many superhero teams, including the Avengers, Defenders, Heroes for Hire and Ultraforce. He’s even formed a romantic bond with Sersi, creating lasting ties to The Eternals.
Dane is often tormented by inner darkness. His enchanted sword also carries a blood curse that threatens to drive the user mad. But through it all, Dane has repeatedly proven himself as one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

BLACK KNIGHT’S ETERNALS CONNECTION
During his 1990s with the Avengers, Black Knight had a close romantic relationship with Sersi, one of the Eternals. This quickly turned into a love triangle when Dane found himself infatuated with the Inhumans’ Crystal, who was also on the team. Although Sersi was one of the team’s strongest members, she grew increasingly mentally unstable due to the influence of an evil, alternate reality Black Knight named Proctor.
Black Knight and Sersi eventually left the Avengers and traveled to the Ultraverse, an alternate reality where they encountered Loki, the Infinity Stones and the heroes of Malibu Comics. On their way back to the Marvel Universe, Dane and Sersi fought the X-Men villain Apocalypse in the 12th century before getting separated in the timestream.
After returning to the Marvel Universe, Dane joined Luke Cage and Iron Fist in the Heroes for Hire before moving on to European super-teams like New Excalibur, MI: 13 and Euroforce.
As the Ebony Blade took an increasing toll on his sanity, Whitman found himself pursued by the Avengers in his short-lived 2015 series Black Knight, by Frank Tieri and Luca Pizzari. Although that story left him as the ruler of the kingdom of New Avalon in the other-dimensional Weirdworld, he eventually returned to the Marvel Universe to lend a hand in crossovers like Secret Empire and War of the Realms.

Kit Harington Plays Black Knight In The MCU
Kit Harington portrays Dane Whitman in Eternals, and the actor is certainly no stranger to the sword-and-sorcery genre; he’s best known for his performance as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, a role for which he’s received significant acclaim and even two Emmy nominations. There’s a sense in which Marvel cast Harrington to type, but Black Knight offers a lot of variance from the put-upon Bastard of Winterfell. Considering that Dane is not an Eternal himself, Harrington’s appearance in Eternals is more of a secondary role, similar to in nature to the supporting role of James Rhodes in Iron Man, establishing his future as War Machine (Rhodey was played by Terrence Howard in the first Iron Man, with Don Cheadle portraying Rhodey from Iron Man 2 on). Though Dane’s role in Eternals is smaller than Rhodey’s intro, it follows a similar set up to his heroic future.
Harington is the only known non-Eternal character as of now.

Kit Harington is part of The Eternals. At Disney’s D23 Expo in California on Saturday, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that the Game of Thrones star will play Dane Whitman a.k.a. Black Knight in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, slated to release in November 2020. In the comics, Whitman is an expert horseman and wields a mystical sword. Additionally, both Gemma Chan and Barry Keoghan have also been confirmed in The Eternals cast. Chan will be playing Sersi — a role that was initially rumoured for co-star Angelina Jolie — who differs from other Eternals in “her desire to live amongst humans” in the comics.
The 32-year-old Harington was first reported to join the MCU on Friday, while reports floating Chan and Keoghan’s potential involvement came over two weeks back. Harington will reunite with fellow Game of Thrones alum Richard Madden on The Eternals. As of now, Harington’s Black Knight is the only known non-Eternal character in the film. For Chan, Sersi and The Eternals will be the second MCU role and movie, respectively, after playing Kree sniper Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel. Keoghan is also playing an Eternal named Druig.
Harington, Chan, and Keoghan join a cast that already includes Madden as Ikaris, Jolie as Thena, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Salma Hayek as leader Ajak, Brian Tyree Henry as Phasto, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Ma Dong-seok as Gilgamesh, and Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, MCU’s first deaf superhero. Feige has also said later that The Eternals will have an LGBTQ character, though it’s still unclear who that is.
Marvel announced The Eternals as one of five MCU Phase Four films at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con in July, alongside Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: Love and Thunder, all releasing between May 2020 and November 2021. At the D23 Expo on Saturday, before adding Harington, Chan, and Keoghan to The Eternals cast, Feige also announced Black Panther 2, with writer-director Ryan Coogler returning.
The Eternals will release November 6, 2020 in India and across the world.

Black Knight’s Comic Powers
Dane Whitman is an ordinary human being, albeit a brilliant physicist. His weapon of choice is the Ebony Blade, an apparently indestructible enchanted sword that can cut through any substance and disrupt energy fields due to its mystical properties. Unfortunately, long-term use of the Ebony Blade has a negative effect of the mental stability of the wearer, a result of the blood curse. The Ebony Blade’s malevolent influence is strengthened by the shedding of blood, for which it has an insatiable appetite; at one time it actually turned even the noble Dane Whitman into a serial killer.
Dane Whitman’s Black Knight is known for wielding certain other mystic weapons as well, notably the Sword of Light and the Shield of Night. These were gifts from the Lady of the Lake, and are enchanted to act in concert; the shield can absorb energy directed at it and the sword can be used to project said energy as destructive beams. In the ’90s the Black Knight briefly chose to ditch magic and use a laser sword that Whitman had developed himself instead.
As the heir to Sir Percy’s legacy, Dane Whitman sometimes has help from an unexpected source; the ghost of Sir Percy of Scandia, who acts as an adviser to all those who carry the mantle of Black Knight. There have also been times when the Black Knight has rode a magical winged horse, akin to those used by the Valkyries.
WHO IS THE BLACK KNIGHT?
The original Black Knight was created by Stan Lee and Joe Maneely for Atlas Comics, Marvel’s precursor, in 1955. Years before heroes like Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four established the Marvel Universe, Black Knight followed the medieval adventures of Sir Percy of Scandia as he fought the evil wizard Morderd the Evil. In his quest, Percy used armor that had been enchanted by Merlin the Magician and the Ebony Blade, a mystical sword Merlin carved out of meteorite.
Although the series only lasted five issues, the Ebony Blade became cursed to slowly drive its users mad, due to all of the blood that it was used to spill.
In 1964, Stan Lee and Dick Ayers introduced a present-day Black Knight in Tales to Astonish #52. Professor Nathan Garrett, Percy’s descendant, found the Ebony Blade but could not use it, due to his evil inclinations. Enraged by this, he developed several hi-tech medieval-style weapons and became the villainous Black Knight.
After fighting Giant-Man and the Avengers and joining the Masters of Evil, he died after falling off his flying robot horse during a fight with Iron Man.
Black Knight: Origin and Background
Dane Whitman is one of many incarnations of Black Knight introduced over the years. The original Black Knight predates even heroes like Spider-Man and the Avengers. This version, Sir Percy of Scandia, was an actual knight of Camelot who battled Mordred the Evil after the death of King Arthur.
The original Black Knight fought in defense of Camelot, despite it only being a model.
In modern times, Sir Percy’s descendant Nathan Garrett inherited the Ebony Blade and became the second Black Knight. This Black Knight became a villain, battling the Avengers before repenting and passing the sword on to his nephew, Dane Whitman. And though several other characters have taken up the Black Knight mantle since, Dane has remained the most popular and enduring version.
Initially mistaken for a villain (thanks to his nefarious uncle), Dane managed to prove himself to the Avengers by infiltrating the Masters of Evil and then saving the team during a conflict with the Grandmaster and Kang the Conqueror. He quickly became a valuable member of the Avengers, playing a key role in the seminal storyline Avengers: Under Siege. He even temporarily became the team’s leader. This is also where Dane struck up a romance with Sersi, who took a break from the Eternals to fight alongside the Avengers.
Black Knight and Blade have served on the same team before.
Dane is also a member of another major Marvel team known as the MI:13. As the name suggests, the MI:13 is a top-secret British intelligence agency that forms its own Avengers-like team in response to a Skrull invasion of Earth. Dane’s MI:13 allies include Captain Britain, Union Jack and even the vampire hunter Blade. More on him in a minute.
Throughout his time with the Avengers and other teams, Dane has often become a victim of forces larger than himself. He discovered the Ebony Blade has a blood curse that threatens to drive him insane. He’s often become unstuck in time and transported back to the 12th Century. He and Sersi have even battled his evil doppelganger Proctor and become stranded in the alternate universe known as the Ultraverse. The status quo is always changing for Dane Whitman, but one thing always remains constant — he’s one of Earth’s most valiant heroes.

In addition to being an Avenger, Dane Whitman has also been a member of the Defenders, a Hero for Hire teammate alongside Luke Cage, and part of Excalibur. He’s been involved in some major events like the Avengers-Defenders War, Secret Invasion and Operation: Galactic Storm during the Kree Shi’ar War. And due to his lineage, he has also been possessed by his ancestor Sir Percy and had his own spirit travel back in time to possess the bodies of former Black Knights.
Oh yeah, Dane Whitman also flies a genetically engineered horse (with wings) named Aragorn that was passed to . Maybe Kit Harington’s character will ask Tessa Thompson’s for his horse back. In any case, he’s been to space, Camelot, the alternate universe Ultraverse and Weirdworld, to name a few. This character has a rich history to tap into, but what does that mean for him in Eternals?
Speaking about Kit Harington’s casting as Dane Whitman, the following:
The Eternals showcases for audiences, and it has a lot of characters to service. With a cast this crowded, it’s tough to say how big a role Dane Whitman will have in the movie. As such, it might seem like a strange choice to introduce Dane Whitman in The Eternals, unless Marvel is going to do something specific with the Dane-Sersi romance.
If I had to guess, that romance will play a factor in Sersi’s story, and if this movie features the Eternals , it’s also possible Dane could show up at a different point in time. Feige has said Dane won’t be an Eternal, but it is still possible he is an immortal thanks to magic, and not science, and that Sersi could meets him in the past. He may not even become the Black Knight before movie’s end, but I would expect a hint or two in that direction.
Following Game of Thrones, Kit Harington was an obvious candidate to join the MCU or Star Wars at some point, but the ‘when’ and the ‘who’ are a bit of a surprise. Although he’s a cool character with some fun elements and a unique history, Black Knight is not an A-, B- or even C-List character, recognition-wise. So as it goes with the Eternals themselves, we don’t quite know what he’ll be like in the MCU, but it is exciting that he’s joining it and being played by an actor who seems well-suited to this kind of role.

Despite his relatively minor role in the grand scheme of the Marvel Universe, his presence in the MCU was rumored late last year. That rumor also suggested that he may have a connection to the Quantum Realm, although that remains to be seen.
At the same time that Harington’s role in Eternals was announced, Marvel revealed that Captain Marvel star Gemma Chan would be joining the film as Sersi. Given their lengthy shared history, Dane and Sersi seem likely to have some sort of connection or relationship in the MCU. With his history of traveling through dimensions, Whitman could also play a role in the MCU’s increasingly important multiverse.
While the MCU has lost iconic heroes like Iron Man, Steve Rogers and (possibly) Spider-Man, the presence of Black Knight and Sersi gives the MCU two more classic Avengers, who are likely to find themselves on a future incarnation of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

In the Marvel comics, Dane Whitman actually became leader of one incarnation of the Avengers, and it was while there that he wound up in a slightly confused romantic relationship with the Eternal named Sersi. The Eternals suffer from a mental condition referred to as the Mahd Wy’ry; a result of their immortality, their still-human minds break down under the strain of their almost limitless knowledge. Sersi began to suffer from the Mahd Wy’ry, and in order to save her, the Eternals bonded her psyche with the Black Knight’s. Dane was unwilling to become bonded to Sersi this way and resented it, but he was far too chivalrous to openly object.
Unfortunately, the result was a very strange, confused romance that ran over the course of the next few years. Making matters worse, Sersi developed the ability to traverse dimensions, and soon Black Knight and Sersi were exploring the Multiverse together. The bond was eventually broken, but many of the Black Knight’s most important stories feature Sersi as a love interest.
WHO IS DANE WHITMAN?
As Garrett lay dying, he summoned his nephew Dane Whitman and asked him to atone for his life of crime as a heroic Black Knight. When Dane debuted as the Black Knight in Roy Thomas, George Tuska and John Verpoorten’s Avengers #47, the Avengers initially mistook him for his villainous uncle before making him an on-and-off provisional member of the team.
After floating around the Marvel Universe for years, Dane joined the Avengers for a few years in the mid-1980s, where he dealt with the corrupting influence of the Ebony Blade. After a few years away from the team, Dane started his most notable stint on the Avengers in the early 1990s, where he served as the team’s leader when Captain America wasn’t around.

Black Knight: Powers and Abilities
On his own, Dane Whitman has no superhuman powers to speak of, though he is among the best swordsmen in the Marvel Universe and happens to be a brilliant physicist. But after bonding with Sersi through a ritual know as «Gann Josin,» Dane temporarily gained enhanced strength, speed and durability. He also later gained the ability to see through magical illusions.
Most of Black Knight’s powers come from his weapons. The mystical Ebony Blade was forged by Merlin himself and can cut through nearly any substance in the universe, magical or otherwise. The Ebony Blade can also absorb energy and be summoned from afar like Mjolnir. This sword has a serious downside, however. It’s infected with a blood curse, meaning that the more blood it spills, the more it drives its owner insane. Dane has sometimes compensated by replacing the Ebony Blade with other weapons, including the Sword of Light and Shield of Night.
Black Knight can often be seen riding a winged steed named Aragorn into battle.
Is Black Knight Good or Evil?

The Black Knight is not consistently a hero nor are they consistently a villain; they bend at the will of the Ebony Blade and its demands. While Sir Percy was more heroic during his time as the Black Knight after contesting against the traitorous Mordred the Evil, Nathan’s more sinister nature deemed him less worthy of carrying on the legacy of the Black Knight and wielding the Ebony Blade for himself. He joins the ranks of the supervillain conglomerate Masters of Evil and establishes that his time as the Black Knight is to be viewed as a villain. However, his version of the Black knight does not act as the definitive personification of the character, only a stint throughout the character’s history.
Dane, on the other hand, is depicted as a hero, as he fights alongside heroic organizations including the Avengers. As it is Dane who is called to accept his fate as Black Knight in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his moral alignment is assumed to be more «good» than the «evil» variations of the character.
Kit Harington is likely to appear in Marvel’s upcoming Blade movie
According to Eternals VFX Supervisor Stephane Ceretti, it’s extremely likely that Harington will show up in the upcoming Blade movie. Per Game Rant, Ceretti has confirmed that the Ebony Blade will show up in the film. Which also means that Whitman should be there.
“The funny thing is my second on the show — which is Mårten Larsson, my additional supervisor — is actually going to be supervising Blade very soon,” Ceretti said. “So I told him, I said, ‘I’m giving that to you as a gift, use it wisely and make good out of it.’ But I’m sure it’s going to do actually even better.”

After Eternals: Black Knight and Blade’s MCU Future
What does Blade want with the future Black Knight? As we’ve already established, the two characters do have a shared connection in the comics in the form of the MI:13 organization. This could be Marvel’s first step toward establishing that team in the MCU.
Given that Blade himself is pretty handy with a sword, he may be taking on the role of mentor to Dane. If we’ve learned anything about Blade over the years, it’s that he has little love for supernatural parasites that prey on the lifeforce of mortals.
Ali has signed on to star in the Blade reboot, which could mean Harington will play a supporting role alongside him. And from there, who knows? There could be an MI:13 movie in the works, or even a Black Knight series on Disney+. For a guy like Dane Knight, nothing is impossible.

Eternals End Credits: Who Is That Voice?
Black Knight doesn’t have an extensive history outside of Marvel’s comics. He appeared in a non-speaking role in an episode of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. He’s also appeared as a playable character in games like Marvel Avengers Alliance, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers and the arcade game Avengers in Galactic Storm. But thanks to Marvel’s Eternals, he’s finally made his live-action debut.
Dane is ultimately more a supporting character in the film, and we never actually see him suit up as Black Knight. However, a post-credits scene does confirm that transformation is on the way. When we last see Dane, he’s approaching the Ebony Blade, only to be interrupted by an unseen voice in the room. That voice is none other than Mahershala Ali’s Blade.
