Shiny, New, And Hollow
The new Gossip Girl follows the plight of two half-sisters, Julien Calloway and Zoya Lott whose lives couldn’t be more different. While Julien is a fawned-over Instagram influencer who’s propped up by besties and PR mavens Luna La and Monet de Haan, Zoya is new to the city, moving from Buffalo on a scholarship to be closer to her sister. The tension of this dynamic — which begins with fighting over a boy — is responsible for the rhythm of the show, which I won’t deny, at first really felt promising.
Episode one opens with quick quips about Berghain and celebrity gossip Instagram account deuxmoi, all of which felt in-line with Gossip Girl’s penchant for au courant references. I was intrigued and my mind raced with possibility: Which restaurants would become go-to haunts? What New York institutions would be added to my Gossip Girl sightseeing list? And which guest appearances would attempt to correct the immortal sin of that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner cameo?
All these promises fall flat within the first three episodes and watching the rest became an unfulfilling task I implored myself to complete. As a diehard Gossip Girl fan, it felt necessary to give this new series a chance.
For all the diversity the show gives us, most of it is only skin-deep. The two main characters — Julien and Zoya — are Black women, Luna is a transgender woman, Monet is a powerful Black lesbian, while Aki is a half-Filipino bisexual man. And yet, most of these characters aren’t ever given the room to fill out these identities, leaving behind lifeless and hollow paper cutouts of people we’re supposed to care about. The writers barely even interrogate the racial wealth gap, let alone spend more than an episode on Luna.
And while most of the Black and people of colour in the show are left to clean up the messes of their white counterparts, the privilege that the show promised to criticise is gleaned over. When Julien’s dad is publicly accused of sexual assault, she deals with the fallout of being ostracised from school, losing her clout and friends while he slinks away to another state never to be seen again.
So are these writers even capable of interrogating the wider lives of these characters without diverting into trauma porn?
This series is markedly shorter than the original cable show: while Gossip Girl once got an 18-episode run, this 12-episode series can barely continue the tension of one fight over two episodes, let alone give characters a chance to grow and be rich, rounded people.
Sure, the original iteration was filled with rich, hot white dummies but the absurdist storylines and continued failings actually feel like criticisms of the rich compared to the reboot’s tepid attempt at “rich guilt.”
This brings us to Otto “Obie” Bergmann IV, the only character — besides Zoya — to question his privilege, wealth, his parents and how his peers treat the few that fall below the 1 percent. You can draw comparisons to the original series hunk Nate Archibald, who also questioned his wealth leading to rich kid ennui and an aimless approach to life. But where Nate actually deals with losing his wealth (albeit momentarily), Obie continues to live in a cushy penthouse while attending protests of his parents’ developments.
But the show’s biggest mistake isn’t in failing its cast, characters or storylines — it’s creating a show void of entertainment.
Be Bad, But Never Be Boring
Gone are the days of Blair trying to weasel herself into Yale by bribing the Dean’s receptionist with rare cat figurines, only to fall flat on her ass when Serena gets in the way of her masterful plan. See, the rich can’t always win. The new Gossip Girl is drenched in misery, and it exists somewhere between its relentless moralising and the kissing scene filmed against the background of a protest-turned-riot.
There are brief glimpses of greatness — like the Hanukkah episode that sees the return of Blair’s iconic mother Eleanor Waldorf and stepfather Cyrus Rose as well as the inimitable Dorota. But this comparison reveals that the original characters were so much larger than life, leaving you to wonder if the reboot is even about Manhattan’s elite at all.
Then there’s Shan Barnes, the show’s only character who brings any excitement, as she leads good-girl Zoya down a treacherous path of skipping school, nail art and breaking curfews. Sure, it all feels a little trivial compared to Georgina Sparks, but it’s about as close as we get. But even then, Shan is pushed to the sidelines and plays but a minor role as the show continues to be suffocated with the rigamarole of the show, like Jules trying to win the fickle Obie back.
Between Tiger King references and an incomprehensible lack of cliffhangers, there’s no greater sin in the reboot than the teachers.
Tavi Gevinson, who plays Kate Keller, an English professor at Constance Billard, is driven to resurrect Gossip Girl — with a gaggle of meek and downright unlikeable cast of teachers — to take revenge and teach a lesson to the mean students and their rich parents.
What’s worse than the show revealing Gossip Girl’s identity from the start has to be that Kate is ultimately dull, turning what was originally an all-seeing and all-knowing watchdog into a cowardly gang of adults that are at best cringeworthy and at worst, spineless.
It’s impossible to see how the new Gossip Girl can come back from such a mediocre debut, especially after it’s pushed itself into a corner of flawed righteousness and HBO-branded misery.
For all the original series did wrong, it gave us what we wanted: unadulterated entertainment that was exciting and imbued with mystery, told to us through characters we actually rooted for, and mostly against. At least it made us feel something.

2. Sexuality
Image via WarnerMedia
Back in 2009, The CW made a big fuss about the Season 3 Episode, “Enough About Eve.” Fans of the novel series were excited about this one, because Chuck was supposed to be bisexual, but it took the show 49 episodes to give a nod to that. And considering how it played out, it was better to leave it off.
The truth is, the original series always advertised itself as bold and daring, but it barely scratched the surface on this matter, especially considering the target audience were teens and young adults. The only gay character closer to the main cast was Eric (Connor Paolo), who was gone for more than half the show’s run and… that’s a wrap on sexual orientation! The original Gossip Girl only got as far as the “B” in LGBTQIA+, and that is only if you count its misrepresentation of bisexuality.
Once again, the new Gossip Girl outpaces the original, with characters that are openly bisexual and not conflicted at all about it, a hint (so far) at a polyamorous relationship, and the start of a touching storyline of a fully grown person who is starting to come to terms with their non-binary identity. We’re still short on transgender characters, though.
The Popularity of the Original Gossip Girl
Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution
Gossip Girl gave viewers insight into an elite and exclusive world. These Upper East Side teenagers enjoyed lavish lifestyles with equally grave pitfalls, their adolescent blunders having far more weighty consequences than one would typically expect. This is in part because of the high standing and prestigious names from which many of them come, with a parent’s multi-million dollar business or political campaign at stake when their teens’ indiscretions come to light. This doesn’t stop the privileged students from indulging and experimenting, even despite the fact that their every move is subject to the public scrutiny of the mysterious Gossip Girl blog. Narrated by Kristen Bell, the elusive figure seems to have the inside scoop on the Upper East Siders at all times, exposing love affairs and betrayals that only those in exclusive circles would know about.
The series primarily focused on its two main “it girls”, Blair and Serena, played by Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, respectively. Audiences watched as the girls fell in and out of love, fought, made up, ate on the steps of the met, shopped til they dropped, and became embroiled in dramas beyond their norm. The ultimate revelation that Dan Humphrey of all people was the figure behind Gossip Girl, was a shocking twist that satisfied fans. Gossip Girl’s cultural impact has far outlived the series, with the aesthetic of the Upper East lifestyle continuing to inspire Pinterest boards and Instagram layouts to this day.
3. Recreational Drug Use & Profanity
Image via HBO Max
As laughable as it seems now, 2007’s Gossip Girl attempted to mimic Skins, a British series that featured characters who were heavy on teenage-ing: they got drunk, smoked marijuana, had sex, cursed a lot, and looked cool while doing it – and that’s only in the first episode. The TV teens of the WB’s New York, however, hardly pushed any envelopes.
Of course, we don’t normally expect a prime-time TV series to defy broadcast network standards and practices, but this didn’t stop other teen TV shows that came before from featuring some, if not all of those topics, sometimes in a pretty serious manner. Just to give one example, The O.C., which was created by the same team of showrunners from Gossip Girl (Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage), tackled the issue of substance abuse by having a main character suffer through it — and its consequences — during half its run.
Airing on the censor-less HBO Max, the new Gossip Girl is no holds barred and that’s for the best — not that we are eager to see teenagers doing cocaine and flipping their parents off, but it’s not realistic to have a show about rich, entitled kids who do none of that.
Dan Got Unmasked Without Much Fallout
In Gossip Girl’s series finale, it is revealed that Dan . He created the site, curated tips for publication, and ultimately wrote himself into the web of the Upper East Side’s elaborate story. The reveal of Gossip Girl’s true identity hangs heavy over the show’s ending. Does it prevent Dan from getting a happy one?
No. After a montage, Serena and the gang worked through any potential angst that viewers may have thought would have arisen with such a revelation. Blair is talked down from the ledge by Chuck, and Dan gives himself a massive pat on the back.
In other words, Penn Badgley played a stalker-of-sorts on Gossip Girl before he made his on Netflix’s , You. Dan ends up making peace with all of his enemies-turned-friends without seeking a whole lot of forgiveness when confronted. It did not keep him from getting a happy ending, as you will see below.

Serena Got Married And Found Happiness
Five years lapsed after learning that Dan was the title character of Gossip Girl and henceforth the person responsible for some of her worst moments (). When Gossip Girl picks up, it is a lot of water under the bridge. The show jumps forward to reveal that Serena is getting married to Dan. Yes, Dan finally wins the woman of his dreams.
Played by Blake Lively (), Serena and Dan’s wedding comprises the busy final minutes of the show. Serena wears a golden-topped frock for the occasion. Viewers do not actually get to see the couple say, “I do.” They are surrounded by their loved ones and get to go out to the sounds of Florence and the Machine’s “You’ve Got the Love.”
A happily ever after for Serena after years of aimlessness. It is unclear what exactly happened for Serena outside of her relationship with Dan during the five years that preceded Gossip Girl’s final ending. I would imagine she is living her best life.

Gossip Girl reboot cast: Are the original stars returning?
The first question on everyone’s mind when HBO Max first announced the Gossip Girl reboot was: Are any of the original cast members coming back?
Aside from Kristen Bell returning as the narrator, the answer sadly seems to be no … at least for right now.
Blake Lively (Serena van der Woodsen) told in 2017, «It sort of all depends. Would I do seven years of the show? No, because it’s hard work and I’ve got my babies, and I don’t want to be away from them that much. But I’ve just learned in life you never say never. I’m looking to do something that I haven’t done yet, not something that I did. But would I do that? Who knows—if it was good, if it made sense. We had so much fun shooting and living and working in New York City.”
Leighton Meester (Blair Waldorf) said something similar, telling , «I never say never.»
Chace Crawford (Nate Archibald) is definitely on board with returning to Gossip Girl, though he’s currently busy filming The Boys season 3. «If there’s an opening in the future for doing a cameo, I would definitely be open,» he told .
Penn Badgley (Dan Humphrey) seems less enthused. He’s also busy with his own show, having just wrapped on You season 3. «I think it’s pretty clear that, like, I’ve never been a proponent of Dan Humphrey’s,» he explained to «I’ve never been necessarily the greatest friend or fan of Dan Humphrey, which now I reconcile in this way that I’m like, you know, I would love to contribute in a meaningful way to it. And I guess it would just depend on a lot of things…It would depend on how and why he’s there.”
If any of them want in, though, the door is always open, according to executive producer Josh Schwartz. “We’ve reached out to all of them to let them know it was happening, and we’d love for them to be involved if they want to be involved, but certainly didn’t want to make it contingent upon ,” he told reporters in 2019.

The show briefly gifts us being the boss that she always dreamed of being, professionally. After requesting some samples arrive by a specific due date, she says she has to attend to Dan and Serena’s wedding guests.
Fans get to see Blair fixing Chuck’s outfit. Blair’s stepfather Cyrus (the scene-stealer of Gossip Girl’s later seasons) does the same for Henry Bass. Everyone takes their place on nearby couches to watch Dan and Serena’s wedding. Blair and Chuck seem to be at peace finally.
Blair is a contented wife, presumably happy mother, and a successful businesswoman. Her life is pretty complete. Blair joyfully takes in her best friend’s wedding alongside her husband. Was Blair and Chuck’s ending worth the wait? This fan wishes it had happened well before Gossip Girl’s finale. Better late than never, though.

The ‘Gossip Girl’ reboot is also different in that there’s more creative freedom — and a bigger budget
Josh Safran explained that the decision to debut the reboot on HBO has had a big effect on the outline and tone of the new series. “It’s HBO Max, so we don’t have restrictions on nudity or sexuality, or language,” he told Interview magazine. “Our budget is bigger now and we have more time. We have more money so we can get into spaces we couldn’t get into the first time around. The clothes have changed.”
Safran continued, “Eric Daman does an amazing job of making a mood board for every character. He and I will brainstorm and he’ll bring me something that includes what I saw, but it’ll also include all the stuff that I would’ve never seen because Eric is a genius. So there isn’t a lot of looking back.”
He did, however, state that there was one specific trope that he deliberately brought back for the reboot: “There has to be a scene outside school. Every episode has to begin with the Gossip Girl voice-over. There were rules that are still in the DNA and stay no matter what.”
5. GG’s Identity Is Not Important
Image via The CW
As bad as Gossip Girl got in its later seasons, no one could have imagined how bad it would mess up the reveal of who the title character GG was. In a “twist” that should be put in the Guinness World of Records under Most Plot Holes Created By a Single Scene, Dan Humphrey was revealed to be a psychopath the one posting all those years, which makes absolutely no sense.
This was the showrunner’s attempt to one-up the audience, which had already predicted Gossip Girl could only be Eric, Dorota (Zuzanna Szadkowski), or maybe even Georgina Sparks (Michelle Trachtenberg), as they were all close and distant enough to the main characters to get the kind of information GG had without being noticed. However, the writers failed to notice that the identity of GG could go unrevealed, because what she represented and how she managed to influence a whole bunch of people was more important than who she was.
Now, there is no mystery of who Gossip Girl is. The first episode tells you upfront who decides to bring GG back to life, which removes one potential problem right off the bat. Of course, if this idea holds up or not depends entirely on how long the new Gossip Girl airs and what it does throughout its run, but in the meantime we’ll tell you how it goes. xoxo.
Gossip Girl drops new episodes every Thursday on HBO Max.

Who will be cast in Gossip Girl reboot and what are their characters called?
The Gossip Girl official Twitter account detailed a number of the main characters for the show at the beginning of 2021, along with one main descriptive word for all of them to give us an idea of what they represent.
Julien Calloway (Jordan Alexander) was described as «Influence». Monet de Haan (Savannah Smith) as «Power». Luna La (Zion Moreno) as «Style». Max Wolfe (Thomas Doherty) as «Freedom». Audrey Hope (Emily Alyn Lind) as «Grace». Kate Keller (Tavi Gevinson) as «Ambition». Akeno ‘Aki’ Menzies (Evan Mock) as «Innocence». Zoya Lott (Whitney Peak) as «Perspective». Otto ‘Obi’ Bergmann IV (Eli Brown) as «Privilege».
Other characters include Lyne Renée as Helena Bergmann (Otto’s mother). Jason Gotay, Johnathan Fernandez and Adam Chanler-Berat are also confirmed.
Nate Archibald: Future Mayor?
Five years after Chuck got married to Blair and the truth about Gossip Girl’s titular inspiration got unmasked, Nate is doing well. Okay, he is better than well. The flashforward starts off with Mr. Archibald as comes off of The NY Spectator’s private jet. Nate’s not-so-thinly-veiled allusions to JFK Jr. remain intact until the very end.
Nate appears single and ready to mingle. One of the few singletons among his friend group. No wives . Nate’s search for love gave Gossip Girl a lot of stories. The show’s ending did not force him into any strict pairing. Nat gets off his jet with a thriving career and no romance in mind.
Nate is leading in the polls to be the Mayor of New York before ever announcing his candidacy. It is unclear if Nate is going to run or not, but his “we’ll talk tomorrow” response to the reporter indicates he is planning to wade into politics. Why Nate?
If you ever wondered about how the storylines on Gossip Girl came together, Blake Lively has shed light on it. In a piece taking a walk down memory lane after Gossip Girl celebrated ten years since it premiered in 2007, Lively provided crucial insight, telling :
Interesting. Call me old fashioned, but whether planned long in advance or not, the best part of Gossip Girl’s ending is that Rufus and Lily did not get back together. What will happen in Gossip Girl season 3?
If the series does get picked up elsewhere and a third season happens, the only concrete-ish thing we know is it’ll likely take place during the first semester of senior year.
“I definitely would love to keep the show going,” Safran told Harper’s Bazaar around the time season 1 debuted. “I engineered it so that every season is a semester, so that we didn’t get into the problem the first show got into, which was by season 3, they had to go to college. Back in 2007, Gossip Girl had a blog. A blog. So, on top of being a major whistleblower, she also had to know basic HTML, and everyone had to read the scandalous tea on the tiny screens of their flip phones. Needless to say, this sounds like forever ago. With social media being an ever-changing entity, the new Gossip Girl now has an Instagram account, which already sounds old for Gen-Z TikTokers.
Nevertheless, we are way more obsessed with social media now than we were in 2007, and it’s not hard to buy that an anonymous account would get traction and blow up like Deuxmoi overnight. Gossip Girl is social media and definitely belongs in Instagram, with the type of features (stories, reels, tagging) that 100 percent serve her purpose.
