11. Tom Baker: Genesis of the Daleks

Ultimately, The Doctor is always at his best when he’s fighting the Daleks. When this fight takes the form of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey paradoxical nonsense, then all the better!

Genesis of the Daleks poses an interesting moral question, as The Doctor finds himself, thanks to the power of time travel, in a position to destroy the Daleks before they’re even created. But does The Doctor have the right to sentence enemies to death before they’ve even been born? Or do the Daleks deserve a right to make their own choices, even if that means allowing them to murder countless life forms across the galaxy?

This is a question that has returned during Peter Capaldi’s time as The Doctor, and the moral conundrum hasn’t lost any of its significance with time. What’s particularly interesting is that, over time, different Doctors have taken varied stances on whether pre-emptive destruction is a good idea, showing that there really is no clear cut answer to what can be justified in the time of war.

5. Christopher Eccleston: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

The second attempt at a soft reboot for the Doctor Who franchise since its cancellation following the Sylvester McCoy era, Christopher Eccleston’s brief time as The Doctor was vitally important to renewing the popularity of the classic science fiction show.

Thankfully, Eccleston was up to the task of carrying such a series, and this is apparent throughout the two-parter The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances. Here, we get one of the most disturbing monsters of the series in the form of characters that are mutated by World War II gas masks as they roam the land in a zombie-like state.

But for a show which has taken a darker turn with a battleworn Doctor, who is desperately trying to reconcile his past and become a kinder, less violent man, the twist ending of these two episodes really show what Doctor Who is capable of in terms of making us see villains through a sympathetic light.

Plus, in case we needed any other reason to love this era of Doctor Who, these two episodes first introduced the world to John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness. The world owes Russel T Davies a debt of thanks.

Conclusion

David Tennant is a brilliant actor who made an indelible mark on Doctor Who, capturing the imaginations of children and adults alike during his tenure. However, no portrayal of such an iconic character can be universally beloved by all fans. For a small but vocal minority, Tennant represents a deviation from what they believe the Doctor should be.

Yet these critiques arise from every Doctor’s tenure eventually. They reflect not flaws in Tennant’s skills, but the impossible task of living up to 50+ years of mythology. No actor can please every fan across eras.

That Tennant still evokes passion among his detractors shows the power of his performance. He defined the role for a new generation, even if some older fans resisted his interpretation.

In the end, the Doctor must change and evolve just as society does. The Tennant era helped revive Doctor Who to thrilling new heights of popularity, even if it took the character in directions some did not prefer.

For 10 years and beyond, David Tennant’s Doctor made millions fall in love with this daft old Time Lord all over again. That above all explains why he is still beloved by so many for his magical period at the TARDIS controls.

There She Goes – 21st June, BBC Two, 9pm

Shaun Pye and Sarah Crawford’s moving autobiographically inspired comedy drama There She Goes – in which Tennant stars alongside Jessica Hynes (Years and Years) as parents to a severely learning disabled daughter, Rosie (Miley Locke) – is returning for a one-hour special about Rosie struggling to navigate puberty, and receiving a diagnosis about her chromosomal disorder which could change everything. The series has been rightly praised for how it has helped to shine an honest light on the reality of families with a learning disabled child, helping to break down taboos and showing the messy, imperfect but ultimately resilient ways of coping with such a life-changing situation. It’s an emotional watch, but one that’ll stay with you for a long time afterwards.

8 ‘Doctor Who’ (2005 — )

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90%

Doctor Who is a long-running British TV series that centers on the adventures of the Doctor, a time-traveling alien with the ability to regenerate into a new form when near death. The Doctor, usually accompanied by companions, explores the universe in a time-traveling spacecraft called the TARDIS, which appears as a British police box. Together, they encounter various villains, aliens, and civilizations while facing moral dilemmas and saving the universe from imminent threats.

The Tenth Doctor was portrayed by Tennant with a unique blend of vivacity, wit, and emotional depth. He skillfully captured the Doctor’s wide range of emotions, moving from moments of levity and eccentricity to periods of profound sadness and meditation, making him an iconic figure.

14. Peter Cushing: Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.

Following The Dalek Invasion of Earth, it was clear that audiences still had more desire to see humans facing off against these villains, and the result was a series of movies which didn’t take place in the continuity of the main Doctor Who series, but which has affected the show in plenty of ways over the years.

These movies came out during the William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton eras of the show, but featured a different actor in the lead role. Peter Cushing was a very respected actor at the time, in large part thanks to his performance in Hammer Horror movies about vampires, Frankenstein, and other monsters. Today he’s best known for playing Grand Moff Tarkin in the original Star Wars, but his turn as Doctor Who (his character’s surname is actually “Who” in these stories) is also well remembered by fans of the show.

Daleks – Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. is also interesting as it introduced Bernard Cribbins to the franchise. This actor would later play Donna Noble’s grandfather in the main continuity of the show, and would be The Doctor’s companion for David Tennant’s final pair of episodes.

Что такое ТАРДИС?

ТАРДИС (TARDIS, Time And Relative Dimension In Space) — это машина времени и космический корабль в одном устройстве, заключенные в форму синей полицейской телефонной будки образца 1963 года.

But Wait, There’s More…

You might have heard a familiar voice (spoiler alert: it’s David Tennant) narrating Spy in the Ocean, the BBC’s latest wildlife documentary which began airing on 4th June, which uses high-tech spy cams disguises as animals to capture unprecedented footage of species like manatees, sperm whales and sea lions.

You’ll hear Tennant’s voice in a couple of upcoming animated series too. Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy is co-creator of Standing By, a satirical animated comedy about a team of judgmental, gossip-starved guardian angels, which Tennant will star in alongside the legendary Glenn Close, Samira Wiley (Orange Is The New Black) and Levy himself. Meanwhile, ARK: The Animated Series is a sci-fi show based on the video game ARK: Survival Evolved, in which Tennant plays the antagonist, a mysterious scientist called Sir Edmund Rockwell, is due to be released later in 2023.

6 ‘There She Goes’ (2018-)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 91%

There She Goes revolves around the life of a family coping with the challenges of raising a young girl with a severe learning disability with the narration told through the perspective of the girl’s parents, Simon (Tennant) and Emily (Jessica Hynes).

The show presents a very realistic picture of parenting and the challenges and rewards of raising a child with special needs. Tennant’s sensitive acting additionally enables viewers to connect with Simon’s journey and the commonplace facts. However, the parents, who have wonderful chemistry together on screen, offer some delightful humor to break up the doom.

Ahsoka – August 23rd, Disney+

Tennant isn’t just bringing us one long-awaited role reprisal in 2023 – fans were also delighted to discover that he will once again voice the Droid Master Huyang in the upcoming Star Wars series Ahsoka. We last saw Huyang back in the fifth series of Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2012, in which he taught the Jedi younglings to construct their lightsabers before they helped to rescue the former Jedi Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson, Luke Cage) from pirates. Fans are already excited to see Huyang reunite with Ahsoka in this spin-off of The Mandalorian, in which she investigates an emerging threat to the galaxy following the fall of the Empire in Return of the Jedi.

3. Matt Smith: Vincent and the Doctor

Following David Tennant’s heartwrenching performance as an increasingly lonely Time Lord who’s suffering hugely from the pain of loss, Matt Smith barrels into Who canon as a bright, wacky, energetic Doctor who’s more about quick laughs and fast fun than long periods of introspective sadness.

It’s interesting, then, that the most powerful episode of Matt Smith’s tenure as the character is one which is far more subdued, quiet, and thoughtful, as The Doctor and Amy attempt to bring joy and meaning into the life of Vincent Van Gogh. There are plenty of laughs throughout the episode, but what really stands out is the heartfelt portrayal of depression, and the way that the show proves that there can be moments of light even amongst the most painful emotional darkness.

There’s nothing in all of Doctor Who canon quite like watching Vincent, totally convinced of his own eternal failure, discover that one day, long in the future, he’ll gain the lasting recognition that he’s been striving for.

He’s Seen as Too Friendly and Familiar with Fans

Another peculiar source of animosity towards David Tennant is a perception by some fans that he has become too familiar and overexposed from conventions, interviews, and other appearances.

Accessible Celebrity Persona

Unlike past Doctors who were more remote, Tennant has cultivated an very accessible celebrity persona, frequently appearing at conventions and enthusiastically engaging with fans. While many appreciate his openness, others feel it undercuts the Doctor’s mystery. To them, Tennant has “sold out” the Doctor’s integrity for fame.

Over-saturation at Events

Relatedly, some believe Tennant’s ubiquitous convention appearances and continued association with Doctor Who has led to over-saturation.

When he dominates so many Doctor Who-related events well after his tenure, some think it detracts attention from other Doctors and can feel like hogging the spotlight. They wish he’d step back and let the current Doctor take center stage.

Too Much Speculation About Returning

Tennant’s close relationship with the show also leads to constant speculation of him potentially returning to the role someday.

This can frustrate fans eager for the current Doctor to come into their own without the past hanging over them. Some wish Tennant would state definitively whether he’d ever return so it doesn’t distract from celebrating whoever holds the role now.

2 ‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ (2022 — )

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100%

Based on the first campaign of the Dungeons & Dragons web series Critical Role, The Legend of Vox Machina follows the titular team as they must save the planet once more, this time from a dangerous dragon alliance known as the Chroma Conclave, after saving the kingdom from evil and disaster at the hands of the most dreadful power couple in Exandria.

Tennant voiced General Krieg, a minor role in the series. Despite the role’s size, Tennant nevertheless gave a performance that was distinctive and outstanding enough to showcase his voice acting skills and convince the audience that he has to take on more projects of this nature. The show

Doctor Who – November, BBC One

Not content with being just the tenth Doctor, Tennant will be returning to Doctor Who as the fourteenth Doctor for the three 60th anniversary specials this November, making the dreams of several gazillion Doctor Who fans come true in the process. Not only that, but he’ll be reuniting with Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, something we know should be impossible after the Doctor had to wipe her memory of him to save her life back in series four. The trailer also reveals a couple of classic Doctor Who monsters from a 1980 comic (Beep the Meep and the Wrarth Warriors) and Neil Patrick Harris playing a creepy baddie many fans believe to be The Celestial Toymaker, a Who villain we haven’t seen on TV since the 1960s.

Learners

No Streaming Information Available

Learners is a hugely underrated BBC comedy that follows David Tennant’s character, Chris, as he’s forced to achieve the impossible and teach the underachieving Bev to drive. It’s probably one of Tennant’s least well-known films to date, but it features lots of great jokes and hilarious line deliveries from the acting veteran.

Tennant stars opposite Jessica Hynes in Learners, and the two have hilarious chemistry together on-screen. Ironically, the two had already shared the screen in the Doctor Who episode ‘Human Nature’ — which features some of Doctor Who’s scariest aliens of that era.

3 ‘Hang Ups’ (2018-)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 94%

Hang Ups revolves around the life of Dr. Richard Pitt (Stephen Mangan), a therapist offering online counseling sessions to his clients. Each episode follows a different therapy session, with Dr. Pitt dealing with a range of clients and their eccentricities.

Tennant portrayed Martin Lamb, a client of Dr. Pitt. Tennant received tremendous appreciation for his depiction of Martin because he brought his renowned charisma and comedic timing to the part. Additionally, Tennant’s portrayal showcases the complexity and humor of the program, displaying his prowess in both dramatic and comic acting.

Einstein and Eddington

Available To Stream On HBO Max

Einstein and Eddington is a great historical drama that chronicles the complex relationship between British scientist Arthur Eddington and German physicist Albert Einstein, who are both considered two of the greatest minds of their generation. David Tennant stars as Eddington, whilst Andy Serkis takes up the role of Einstein.

The film explores how their relationship put both of them at great risk, changing the course of modern science forever. The pair had some truly revolutionary and life-changing ideas which Tennant and Serkis navigate expertly in this thrilling drama.

6. John Hurt: Day of the Doctor

Squeezed into canon in order to make the fiftieth anniversary of Doctor Who all the more memorable, John Hurt’s War Doctor is a mysterious regeneration that we don’t know an awful lot about. Built up as a terrible secret that newer Doctors are afraid of, the War Doctor seemed for a time to be some form of deadly, evil incarnation of the hero – until, that is, he appears in Day of the Doctor, and is revealed as a battle weary Time Lord who has lost faith in his people, and who will reluctantly take an ultimate step to end the Time War in order to spare the lives of countless souls throughout the universe.

Getting John Hurt to play this role is a stroke of genius, as the renowned actor brings a level of quiet sadness to The Doctor that we don’t often get to see. It’s a real shame that we won’t get more of this particular Doctor, but a single powerful performance and hints at the War Doctor’s adventures are certainly enough to add new richness and flavor to the Doctor Who canon.

7 ‘Des’ (2020)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 90%

Based on the real-life events surrounding the notorious serial killer Dennis Nilsen, nicknamed «Des,» Des is a miniseries set in the 1980s and explores the investigation and subsequent arrest of Nilsen, as well as the subsequent trial and the impact on the victims’ families.

Tennant portrayed the titular role with a terrifying performance that takes his march toward evil to new heights. Audiences and critics were charmed by Tennant’s ability to capture Nilsen’s uncanny charm combined with an underlying sadness. His performance undoubtedly showed off his wide range as an actor, displaying his capacity to take on challenging roles that are frightening and disturbing, further establishing his reputation as a flexible and talented performer.

Secret Smile

Available To Stream On Freevee Amazon Channel

Secret Smile might just be one of David Tennant’s most underappreciated projects to date. In this two-part TV movie, David Tennant plays the character of Brendan Block, who finds himself engaged to his ex-girlfriend’s sister after a particularly nasty break-up.

Things quickly turn sinister for this complex love triangle, and the film really gives Tennant an opportunity to flex his acting muscles with this complicated role. It might not be as stylish or bold as some of the actor’s later projects, but it’s an extremely effective drama with some truly impressive character work and performances.

He’s Not Considered a “Proper” Doctor By Some Fans

When David Tennant took over the role of the Doctor from Christopher Eccleston in 2005, he was only 34 years old. This made him one of the youngest actors to ever play the Doctor. Many longtime fans of the show were skeptical of Tennant’s ability to portray the centuries-old Time Lord convincingly.

His portrayal was also a departure from the character’s traditional persona. Where previous Doctors like Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker had been mature, brooding figures, Tennant’s Doctor was lively, eccentric, and bursting with enthusiasm. This was off-putting to fans who were used to a more stern, fatherly Doctor.

Too Much Romance With Companions

Another criticism of Tennant’s Doctor was the increased focus on romance between the Doctor and his female companions. Some fans accused the show of pandering to younger viewers by playing up love stories.

Scenes like Tennant kissing companion Rose Tyler in “The Parting of the Ways” or Martha Jones professing her love for the Doctor led some fans to believe the show had become a melodrama. For some, this betrayed the classic Doctor Who ethos.

Perceived As Less Authoritative and “Doctorish”

Besides his age and romantic plots, Tennant’s eccentric costume choices led many to see his Doctor as less authoritative and doctorish. Sporting Converse trainers, a duster coat, and wild hair, Tennant seemed too casual and modern versus the Time Lord stereotype.

This reinforced the belief that Tennant was deviating too far from the character’s roots and not portraying the Doctor seriously enough. For fans used to Doctors like William Hartnell and Jon Pertwee who had an air of wisdom and gravity about them, it was a tough pill to swallow.

9 ‘Staged’ (2020-2022)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89%

Staged is a television series that follows the lives of actors David Tennant and Michael Sheen as they navigate the challenges of virtual rehearsals and creative frustration during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. The show takes a meta approach, blurring the lines between fiction and reality, as Tennant and Sheen play exaggerated versions of themselves.

In the best possible way, Tennant and Sheen’s winning chemistry from Good Omens was carried over to Staged, continuing to make fans faint over their lovely bromance. Moreover, Staged offers a witty and light-hearted perspective on the difficulties faced by performers and the creative profession in these unprecedented times by blending humor, self-deprecation, and moments of real thought.
